My dad was just newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He has been prescribed metformin. Do we need to buy a glucose monitor for him so he can monitor blood glucose levels?

Has anyone heard of the diabetes medication, metformin, being used for weight loss?

My doctor, who prefers the natural way, prescribed this medication for me and said it was safe. He said it was great for weight loss, and it can also be used, orally of course, to do a body cleanse. I don't have diabetes, but he said that wouldn't matter because the medication if safe. Any serious feedback will be greatly appreciated. Please don't advise on weight loss techniques, and address this medication as I'm am very concerned about it. Thanks in advance

Actually, Metformin (or Glucophage) is not only used to reduce glucose levels, but insulin, and testosterone as well. The side effects of which reduce all of the following; acne, hirsutism, abdominal obesity, and amenorrhea.

Metformin has many other health benefits and relatively low negative side effects. Your doctor or pharmacist should be able to address those concerns better though.

The short answer to your question is yes. It should help reduce weight. Glucophage has been proven to have had positive effects on pregnancy as well as negative though. So if you are planning or thinking about having kids soon, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist this as well.

From medical view, why African American have more diabetes prevalence rate than Whites?

According to CDC, the diabetes prevalence in African American is 2 times higher than in non-Hispanic Whites.

First of all, only Type 2 diabetes (the common kind usually related to obesity) is more common in non-whites. Type 1 diabetes (formerally known as juvenile or insulin dependent diabetes) is RARE in non-whites.

Why is Type 2 diabetes more common?

-Genetics. Non-whites seems to more often have certain "thrifty" genes that predispose them to weight gain and insulin resistance, the contributing factors for Type 2 diabetes. Of course, this genetic tendency can most often be over-ridden with healthy lifestyle choices. When food was not plentiful (i.e. famine), these genes were a good thing for survival. In today's world with excess food and little exercise, they can be lethal.

-Cultural/Ethnic practices and beliefs. Certain foods (waffles and fried chicken anyone;), cooking styles, and acceptance of obesity as "healthy" or "normal" can all lead to increased Type 2 diabetes cases. In some cultures, being overweight is considered ideal. Good for getting dates, no so good for Type 2 diabetes risk.

-I personally hate to generalize even more than I have (I was kidding with the chicken and waffles!), but stats do show that a large percentage of African-Americans live in poverty where there is restricted access to healthy foods, or a lack of education to help these people make better choices.

So, there are likely 3 main factors:

-Genetics put them at higher risk
-Lifestyles and cultural norms/foods increase that risk
-Socioeconomic factors contribute to not being able to decrease risk.

That said, it is important for governments to provide healthy food banks, and educate people at risk how they can live healthy and prevent Type 2 diabetes. It's not rocket science, but if you have no education and no resources, it can't get done.

PLEASE help me with this science fair project? I'm DESPERATE!?

I found a science fair project online that's testing the glucose levels in fruits. It told me that I needed glucose test strips, and glucose tablets, fruit, and that's all. I bought the strips, and when I tried them, nothing happened. There was also nothing in the directions about a color code system or anything on how to get results, just how to put it into a meter and stuff. I bought Walgreens Brand Blood Glucose Test Trips : Truetrack. I have no experience with diabetes. The test strips were expensive enough, and I'd REALLY like to not have to buy a meter. If the test strips absolutely REQUIRE a meter, do you have any ideas whatsoever to what I should do from here? Thank you SO much!!!

Does anyone have a diabetic & High Blood pressure meal plan for the week?

My mother just came to live with us and she has Type 2 diabetes and High Blood pressure. Her body swells too when she is upright for more than a few hours.
She is currently on medications and is also overweight.
I know we can change this by diet and exercise, but I need help.
I really think I need to get her on a better diet and watch her sodium too.
Does anyone have any weekly meals plans, recipes, etc?

Diet does not actually have that much of an impact on blood pressure.

On the other hand, diet does make a huge difference in the management of diabetes.

A truly diabetes-friendly diet is a low carb diet.

Please do not use anything labelled 'diabetic' unless it is also labelled 'low carb'.

Carbs are what raise blood sugar, so diabetics should severely limit their carbs.

Recipes that are low in fat but high in carbs are NOT diabetes friendly. The vast majority of 'diabetic' recipes are in fact high in carbs and will raise blood sugar.

Google low carb diet for helpful suggestions. But basically you are looking at combinations of protein and non-starchy vegetables. For example, salmon in dill sauce with cabbage and peas (no potatoes); roast chicken with carrots and broccoli (no potatoes or rice), pork chops with zucchini and cauliflower (no starchy veg).

BTW, I myself have both diabetes and high blood pressure, neither of which is treatable with weight loss nor diet. And believe me, I have tried. My blood pressure is currently in excellent control (100/65 last time it was checked) with a cocktail of pills. The best dietary intervention for Type 2 diabetes is a low carb diet.

Twice a month 'is' enough to start fights over it.

Picture this: She has a joint one night. The next day she feels fine and goes to work. Her first pupil has an accident, a serious one. A pedestrian is knocked over. If your girlfriend is found to have dope in her bloodstream, whether she feels the effects or not, I can't even begin to imagine the trouble she would be in.

I used to smoke weed many years ago. I certainly haven't touched it since becoming a driving instructor. Furthermore, if I am giving lessons the next day, I don't drink the previous evening either - alcohol stays in the blood a long time.

I got lots of ewcm for the first time trying to conceive baby #2 but it came on CD8. Not sure when I ovulated as I put the thermometer away as I was getting too stressed. But we bd on CD6, 9 and 12. Losing weight for a 17 yr old male???

So, basically im 17, 5' 6" and around 30 to 40 lbs overweight (195ish lbs)... i walk to school almost everyday and i've tried working out but i just cant seem to stick with it. I've tried using sheets to fill out and setting goals and i only seem to last a week. Also, i work at a video store where there is free candy and sugar soda (for me) and no matter what I do, i just end up eating/drinking it... i've counted calories and it adds up to like 3000 and many members of my family are diabetic. im really concerned and i want to get my weight under control but i just cant seem to stick to anything. Losing weight can be very difficult, but there are things that can help. Instead of working out by yourself (which I find very tedious) you can play basketball, tennis, or find a buddy to work out with you.

Avoiding the junky foods is really important, as they offer no nutritional value and can make your blood sugar spike and then crash shortly after. Perhaps you would have less craving for them if you fill your diet with other healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and whole grains. These are sources of complex carbohydrates which when consumed give you a more steady blood sugar level. And then you can treat yourself once in a while and eat only a small amount of something unhealthy. You're already taking the right step by being aware of your health, and I really admire what you are doing. Good luck!
