treatment for type two diabetes?
my aunt has had type two diabetes for about seven or eight years and no treatments have seemed to work for her.
she's tried different pills like metformin, avandia, prandin, along with a couple others that i can't remember. she's now on insulin and pills and her blood sugars are higher than ever. she's also tried to supplement with various herbal remedies to help, but nothing seems to.
i don't understand why nothing is working. its not like she is neglecting to take care of herself. once she was diagnosed she started treatment right away, went on a diet cutting out complex carbs (it was a diet recommended by the dietitian at her doc's office), and started exercising everyday. she still does these things, but her blood sugars never improve.
because of this she is constantly sick and has had to stop working to concentrate on her diabetes. she tries so hard, but nothing works and i just want to help her.
any recommendations from you all on what has worked for you? thanks.
I don't want sound 'self serving' but I may have the answer for your aunt. For me, it has to do with the pH level of the food and water I take in. For years I had high blood sugars in the morning - near 200, while taking metformin and avandia.
I've been unemployed for 1.66 years now, so I haven't been able to get to the doc to check my H1C, but the last time it was at 5.8 or so.
I checked my sugar this morning - it was 106. This is with me taking 1/2 the metformin I was taking and no advantia (it really wasn't doing anything for me, I heard about the heart issues and we stopped it).

Diabetic meals and snacks?
My mother-in-law is coming to visit and she is diabetic. I am looking for snack foods to have on hand for her and meal ideas (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). I am in my 3rd trimester currently so I don't have energy to make fancy, time consuming things, so I was hoping for easy suggestions.
I need to make up for the giant batch of delicious bagels we bought for breakfast the last time she came

I'm diabetic, and I eat a lot of veggies and meat for protein, and my diet. I stay away from starchy foods, such as breads or grains, but I do like rice. She can have bread, just not to much. Look on the nutrition labels to check how many Carb and sugars are in whatever you make or purchase.

Dog diabetes, Liver and kidney weakness?
I have a Doberman Pincher, said to have diabetes and weak liver and kidney. We were told that he had only 2 months more to live. I wish to use herbal remedies to improve his health, even if its only 2 months, i want him to feel better. How old is your Dobie? The first thing I would do is get a second opinion from a different vet. Since you are interested in holistic therapy, see if you can find a holistic veterinarian in your area. I live in the greater Cincinnati area and know of one vet, and others who practice alternative therapy along with the usual medicine.
Are you giving insulin injections? Or are you preferring to avoid all traditional courses of therapy?
One supplement that we sometimes use at our clinic is milk thistle, which has protective effects on the liver--you would have to check with a doctor for dosage. You may also want to check in to different diets--there are good prescription diets available, but if you don't want those, check into different over-the-counter foods. If his kidneys are truly failing, low protein diets are recommended.
Many herbs are used in both humans and animals (the milk thistle, for example), however, some can be detrimental when used in different species. Again, I would highly advise checking for a holistic veterinarian in your area who will support your desires.

How can I encourage my 25 year old son to leave home?
My husband (not my son's father) died almost a year ago. He and my grown up son didn't get along. When Tom died I moved from the family home into a small apartment in the downtown area for convenience. My son, who was an active cocaine and opiate user at the time moved in with me with my permission. I managed to help him get off the coke and he's 3 months clean. However, he still uses painkillers on a daily basis. He's on a methadone program but he supplements with the painkillers. I would like him to move on, stop using the opiates, get a job or go back to school and eventually become independent and willingly move out of my very small apartment into his own place.
That's a very tough question. If he is still using pain medication, then he hasn't stopped using drugs. If he moves out, he may never have enough support to quit completely. You have a very hard road ahead of you. You have to love him enough to put your foot down and tell him "no more" with all drugs or he's out. Do your best to help him get clean on all accounts. Tell him you want him clean, working, and eventually going back to school. If he can't go along with your plan, then you aren't helping him any by letting him stay there. You are just prolonging a bad situation. Good luck to you!

Has anyone tried the CPAP PRO mask for CPAP machines for sleep apnea....?

I currently use a gel face mask, which I do pretty good with, but it is causing irritation on my face as well as leaving marks. The CPAP PRO is kept in place with a mouth piece, and uses nose pillows. I just ordered it even though my insurance company won't pay for it. I have read both good and bad reviews on it. Looking for more comments.
And it worked very well for him, keeping him breathing until his pacemaker quit on him. After that, I saw a cable program that was a "medical mystery" thing about this guy with trouble sleeping that CPAP was the solution. It does work. Only, you can't be kissed with it on.
are there more sophisticated ways of taking blood pressure than the spygnomamometer?
i ask this because can you ever really get an accurate reading from those things ? and sometimes it is difficult to hear any sound through the stethoscope.

At my hospital ward I sometimes notice that the blood pressure results on a monitor are different to the results I get when using a portable observation machine, so I don't know what to believe!
I have practiced using a sphyg machine a few times but only in a completely silent room, and most times the results have been quite accurate - but as you said, it really is difficult to hear sound through the stethoscope.
A good quality stethoscope and a quiet room could be the answer to taking BP's with a sphyg!
If you are taking BP's at home, you can try buying a manual BP monitor from a chemist. The only problem with this is that they they often need callibrating for them to be accurate.
If you are taking BP's at a healthcare setting such as a hospital, they should be using manual BP monitors to save time because they are usually callibrated quite often (if they follow practice procedures).
