SpO2% in high altitudes?
Hi, I live in the midwest 581 feet above sea level. My normal SpO2 is between 97%-99%. I am in Colorado Springs now and my SpO2 has only lowered to 95%. Shouldn't it be lower? My pulse oximeter has no problems that I know of.
I also have asthma so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Also what are typical % ranges for SpO2 in high altitudes?
Thanks in advance.
SpO2 is just a Rough gauge of the O2 concentration in ur capillaries.. It does not signify much..
It is not only dependant on the Altitude, But also on the Persons ability to Oxygenate the Blood..
Ofcourse, in High altitude, SpO2 falls, But there will be a variable and an Unpredictable fall, It may fall by 5 points to u and 8 points in ur friend.. There are no standardised calculation for this..
If ur SpO2 is 95 why are u bothered..?? Its absolutely normal. As the altitude increases, O2 in air decreases, there will be some fall in the O2 saturation, But that does not mean that it should fall to certain extent only..!! Ur body would have responded to the Low O2 conc by increasing the Respiratory rate and Lungs would have become more efficient in Oxygenating the Blood.. Hence its Normal.. This process is called Acclimatisation..
And also, SpO2 reading of anything above 91 is absolutely normal... Many normal individuals even in the Lower altitudes will have SpO2 of 91 and they will be normal without any symptoms..
And during an asthmatic attack, the Lung looses its efficiency to Oxygenate the Blood efficiently, thats y the SpO2 falls... But this has nothing to do with altitudes.. And there are no chances of rise in SpO2 due to Asthma, there can only be fall...
Since urs is 95%, its absolutely normal and don bother about it.......
