I'm worried about joining the Cross Country team?

I play lacrosse in the spring, and i just joined the Cross Country team. I am a little worried about being away from my diabetic supplies and someone who can help me. I don't want it to interfere with my activities, but I am not on a pump or a glucose monitor, but I am insulin dependant so the insulin inject makes me go low during sporting events. I usually cut back on insulin, but then sometimes I get to high and then can't perform any athletic things. It's different than lacrosse, because then I was on a feild and I could signal the coach. Cross Country is across fields and around buildings, I want to join, but I want to be safe.
I've tried to get a pump, but my insurance company is a little tough to work with....so I'm just being patient.
I meant I am not on a continous glucose monitor that is attached to you through a sensor on your skin. I have a glucose meter that I use to check on a regular basis.

I've been a type I diabetic since I was 9 years old. I ran cross-country for a couple years. Cutting back a little on your insulin might be ok, but I think a better plan would be to keep your insulin consistent and load up on some sugar before and after your race. Use gatorade or juice if you can handle drinking. Use hard candy if fluids make you cramp up. Make sure you test both before and after as well.
Have you looked into getting a pump? I've had one for about 4 years now. It's awesome.

Diabetic Nutrition - Why is Nutrition Important?

Nutrition is all about what a person with diabetes eats. Nutrition and diet mean the same thing. A person with diabetes has 3 ways to control their blood sugar levels: Nutrition, physical activity and medication.  The combination of good diabetes nutritional supplements and physical activity prevent pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.

The Food Pyramids

Good Supplements for diabetes involves maintaining a well-balanced Diabetic diet plan that includes whole grains, protein, dairy, vegetables, fruit and some unsaturated fats.

Americans are accustomed to seeing the traditional Food and Drug Administration pyramid on every cereal box and FDA-approved publication. While the American food guide pyramid is by all means healthy and comprehensive, we thought it would be fun to share food guide pyramids reflecting the histories of many other ethnic beginnings, cultures and beliefs.

The importance of nutrition for Diabetics requires that we find all sorts of ways to help you create a useful Diabetes food pyramid. To meet that goal will keep working to bring missing pyramids to you. As an option, pick one and adopt it as your own. Eating in the ways of our traditions cannot be a bad thing.

Remember how much smaller plate sizes were, so watch your portions. Click to see Portion Control PlatesAlso, remember how physically active our great grand-parents were, so daily exercise is a must.

Physical activity and exercise is the key to making good diabetes nutrition work. We have to burn excess sugar and fat that we eat. If we choose the traditional approach to eating, it is important to note that we are choosing a way of life, not just the foods that we grew up with and love.

Core Principles of Diabetic food Diet and Nutrition

Pre-Diabetes
Why is Nutrition Important?
Pre-Diabetes Diet

The core principles of proper diabetic supplements are centered on reducing blood sugar levels and increasing healthy vitamins and minerals in the diet. diabetics, especially, should adhere to the principles of the Diabetes Food Pyramid in order to ensure that they have balanced diabetes nutrition to keep their bodies healthy.

However, unlike the general population, diabetics are not always able to process glucose at the cellular level . That is why, it is important for diabetics to understand the chemical reactions that take place in their bodies as they eat food. Understanding the biology of Diabetes is the first step in taking control of your diabetes treatment so that you can live a healthy Diabetics life.

Many Diabetics feel overwhelmed when they are first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, or Gestational Diabetes. Properly managed diabetes, will required you to make some basic lifestyle changes, especially in the way that you approach food. You will definitely need to limit your sugar/carbohydrates in-take.

For example, love pasta? Yes you can still have this food that you love. Only now, a better choice is whole wheat pasta instead of the traditional styles of pasta. Also, you need to limit your food serving sizes (one serving = 1/2cup cooked or baseball) instead of all you can eat. Generally, for all the foods that you love, there is an acceptable alternative that makes you happy and your blood glucose level also.

Know that these lifestyle changes are entirely manageable and will make you healthier and happier as you begin to incorporate them into your regular eating habits. You can feel comfort knowing that millions of diabetics have had to make simple changes to their nutrition plans. To help Diabetics enjoy healthier food choices, many diabetes organizations have developed tips, diabetes meal plans, food, and healthy eating guidelines. Use our interactive learning module on Sugars and Starches to learn more.

Diabetes Healthy Eating Guidelines

Diabetes is a disease that is directly related to your sugar intake and corresponding blood sugar level. Due to the nature of diabetes, the body cannot process sugars the way that it should. Therefore, in order to keep your blood sugar level as low as possible, it is important to limit the amount of sugar/carbs that you eat and take all medications prescribed by your doctor. Remember that a starch unit can made up of thousands of glucose units.

I live in denial with diabetes, how can I deal with this?

I hate being diabetic. I love to eat, and not just anything.I have a very defined palate, and I love gourmet foods. It really sucks because everything I love is off limits. I feel like a failure because of diabetes. Everyone in my family likes to point out my illness, anytime I put something in my mouth. My husband is no help. He likes to eat, and socialize with food as well. I feel like a gluton, and I have so many emotions regarding diabetes. They are all negative. I know so many people who have diabetes including several of my family members, and they make it look so easy...but I have tried to be a compliant diabetic, I do really good for a long time, then I lose interest, almost like a child loses intrest in a sport. I often tell my Doctor, I'm the worst person to have ever gotten this disease. I have no attention span when it comes to compliance. He's used scare tactics, the nice approach, and everything in between. I need an AA group for non compliant diabetics. Any one?

You should go and see a dietician. They are excellent! My sister and i went with my father to his appointments. You can eat whatever you want, just in portions. My mother died of this terrible diease, she had her leg amputated. She never looked after her diet.Than my dad was an alcohlic, and he had his toe removed, and was in the hospital for 2 months. He has since stopped drinking like that. You only live once. Make it count! If you can control it, do it! It would be awful for you to end up on dialysis, like my mother was, 3 times a week for 4 hours each time. My dad is still on the pills, and sometimes he don't watch what he eats.I give him heck all the time, and i make him stuff that he can eat when he comes over to visit, i feel like the parent. You should ask your relatives to help you out, and team up and be a buddy! Good luck, and please control your diabetes, as it is a horrible dieases if you don't!!!!!

What should I do about a grandparent leaving bruises on my son?

My kids just got back from spending a week at my ex husband's parent's house. My son took off his shirt and he had a bruise on his arm. I asked him how he got that, expecting he was going to tell me something he did at camp the week before, but then he told me that his grandfather got upset because he couldn't find his backpack with all his diabetes supplies and his grandfather said he looses his temper when he gets scared. He had grabbed my son's arm and left bruises.

I found out my son had taken a picture of it and sent it to my ex. I spoke with my ex this evening, He said he told his father that it wasn't acceptable and if he couldn't control his temper that he would pick the kids up early. Should I just leave it at that, or should I do something more? There really are no plans for my children to spend any time with them for another year, but I will be quite worried if/when they ever do.

Spend time with the grandparents or with the father? If it is the grandparents, then I wouldn't want my son spending time with someone who can easily lose their temper. Ask your son if he would ever want to spend time with his grandfather again. If it is with the father, it seems mandatory for the son to spend time with him. But the father needs to keep an eye on the situation. "Talking" to the grandfather won't do anything. If he hits your son again, he'll probably threaten your son not to say anything. You might not think it won't happen because he is family, but it does all the time.
I wish you the best of luck.

help, my doctor has just told me I might have to go on insulin for my diabetes?

my A1C is 8.4. It was at a 13.7 a year ago. I'm on Glucophage 1000mg twice a day and a glucotrol XL 5mg. For the first time my cholestrol is out of whack. The Bad cholestrol is 285 and the good cholestrol is at 35. All the doctor said was for me to cut the fat out of my diet. She did this lab when I was sick. Does that alter the tests any? Please give me some advice. I'm very scared because this is type 2 with genetic traits. I've seen the results of both of these conditions. I have had diabetes for 5 years and was controlling it with diet until a year ago.

It's possible that illness could affect cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is the body's repair substance, and an elevated level tends to indicate the presence of inflammation or disease.

The HDL level is a bit low. Improving blood sugar control will both decrease overall inflammation and will improve your HDL level.

I personally would dump any doctor who expected me to take Glucotrol, since it actually contributes to increased insulin resistance and pancreatic burnout, as well as increasing your cardiovascular risk.

You may have better luck with a low-carb (60-70 g per day), high-saturated fat diet, mostly whole foods rather than processed. Regular exercise, including weight training, will improve your insulin resistance and glycemic control. If you reduce carbs or increase exercise, you MUST tell your doctor, as the Glucotrol can cause hypoglycemia. (Your doctor will probably strongly oppose the low-carb diet, though. My doctor lectured me about the recommended ADA diet, but admitted that he follows the low-carb high-fat protocol to control HIS diabetes.)
