Do you think that auto dealerships should be allowed to charge more than sticker price for highly demanded car
I think it is wrong that car dealers mark up the price of a car simply because a manufacturer purposely limits production to inflate market demand. Chevy Corvette I believe is a good example. I'm not sure if its true now, but at one time dealers were running up the price simply because more people wanted one than were available. I dont personally want one, but its something I have always detested about dealers.
haha wow - Have I reached such status that people actually WANT to know what I think?
OK
I hate added markups. Dealers all over the country went to that tactic in the mid 80s and called it a 'market value adjustment'. I hated it as a customer, and hate it as much as a dealer.
The first time I ever saw this was when Miatas first came out. They were hitting $5000 markups, and that was 1985 money! And people would actually pay it... never fails PT Barnum gets proven right.
Now, there is only ONE car in the US domestic market that will carry a markup, and that is the Ford GT and the new Corvette ZR1. OK two TWO US cars.....All others will be produced in sufficient numbers that you can get one. even the Corvette Z06 is produced in sufficient numbers that those who want, and can affford, one can own one. Now, will they discount off MSRP? Sometimes, but not often.
However, with all of that said, a seller can ask whatever he wants if he has the merchandise. Question is, are you willing to pay it? I don't blame people for ASKING for the sun and the moon. We are in a free market economy. Supply vs. Demand. The best deal is one that is negotaited to the benefit of both parties. I would not encourage addendums. But its your own prerogative as to whether you PAY it or not. If you do, who is to blame? If you are SO into having the newest greatest thing that you are willing to pay more than the MANUFACTURER says its worth, why in the world would I stop you?
My dealership does not put added dealer markups on anything. Even the new Tahoe Hybrid - some dealers are sticking up to $10k on the thing. we MIGHT put an addendum on the ONE ZR1 we will get, but at this point it goes against our philosphy, so probably not.
Anywhom. Are they allowed to? Sure. They can ask you to pay wahtever they want. It is up to the consumer to take it upon his or her self to do research, price compare, and make the best deal they can. There are tons of resources available today, so people have no excuse for saying "but, but I didn't know!"
I hope I didnt disappoint
I have had my standard 2 glasses of wine on Saturday night, so I may be off my game =- lol
BTW that is SUPPOSED to be "xx_satanic_mechanic_xx" -- its from the rocky Horror Picture Show, but Yahoo cuts my s**t off....
EDIT: OK maybe its the wine, but I have to say this. My wife collects PEZ dispensers. I know, dont ask... Anyway, She gets them at the stores whenever there is a new one out. We have put some of the old duplicates on eBay. When someone wants to PAY me $50 for a freaking PEZ dispenser that cost 49c new... who am I to stop them. I think its silly, but the buyer determines the price, not the seller.
Thats true here too. The buyer determines wht he/she is willing to pay. You want ot pay $5000 over MSRP? Ok, if you say so....
